A 34-year-old man charged for allegedly claiming to be a staff of the Military Pension Board, was yesterday remanded in prison custody.The man, Emannuel Akaza, who resides at Mararaba, was accused of extorting money from military retirees.
Prosecutor Abdullahi Alhassan said on June 25, 2009, one Wilson Egbolodje of Military Pension Board reported to the police that the accused impersonated as a staff of the board and was caught soliciting and extorting money from military retirees.
He said the accused was also caught with fake documens belonging to the board, which violated Sections 322 and 364 of the Penal Code Law. The accused pleaded not guilty and sought for bail, which was objected to by the prosecutor.
Chief Magistrate O.O. Oyewumi remanded him in prison custody and adjourned the case to July 20 for hearing.
In another case, a 21-year-old man, John Usman, was on Wednesday arraigned for allegedly using a fake N500 note to buy recharge card form a recharge card seller at Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
Prosecutor Rinmak Kefas told the court that on June 30, 2009, one Umaru Faruk of Wuse 2, Abuja, reported at Utako Police Station that the accused used a fake N500 note to buy recharge card from him.
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and requested for bail.
Magistrate Ademuyiwa Oyeyipo granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with a reasonable surety in like sum that must reside within the court's jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit to produce the accused in court on the adjourned date.
The case was adjourned to July 17 for hearing.
