Nigeria: Call Off Strike, PPA Appeals to ASUU

Muideen Olaniyi

3 July 2009

The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Mr Clement Ebri has asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to stop the on-going industrial action in the interest of their students.

Speaking during an in interview in Abuja, Ebri appealed to the striking lecturers to return to the negotiating table, noting that strike was not the solution to the current situation in the country.

He however sympathised with the university lecturers on their demands, particularly the request for improved salaries and a conducive working environment for teaching, adding that the current global melt-down called for understanding.

He noted that the fabulous wages and allowances enjoyed by political office holders was a cause for concern which may have prompted current demands across the labour groups for more pay.

Ebri called for a speedy resolution of the conflict to enable the lecturers return to classes in the interest of the students, noting that the current poor standard of education should not be allowed to deteriorate further.
