Nigeria: Driver in Court Over Cheating

A 28-year-old driver, Obina Adabe was yesterday arraigned before an Abuja magistrate court for allegedly cheating one Mrs Iwowari faith.

The driver, who resides at Chika village, was said to have been entrusted with N7,000 and a vehicle for commercial use but he allegedly converted the money for his use and abandoned the vehicle.

The accused was also charged for removing the rear number plate as well as the battery of the car, valued at N11,000.

Prosecutor Francis Tanko informed the court that the money converted to personal use by the accused was meant to repaint the vehicle to the FCT commercial colour, adding that he committed offences punishable under Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code Law.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and sought for bail, which was not objected to by the prosecutor.

Magistrate Elizabeth Wonni granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with a surety in like sum that must live within the court jurisdiction with a fixed address.

The magistrate also ruled that the surety must ensure that the accused attend court sessions for his case and adjourned the case to July 15 for hearing.

In another court, a 49-year-old driver was on Wednesday arraigned for allegedly driving recklessly and causing an accident that involved his Peugeot 406 car and a Mercedes Benz car, along Aso Drive, Abuja.

The driver, Derby Farouk of No 5, Yar'adua Quarters, Katsina, was accused of committing the offence on May 31, 2009.

Prosecutor Umoh Inah told the court that the accused drove his Peugeot 406 car with registration number CX 564 ABC in a reckless manner without giving consideration to an oncoming Mercedes Benz car with registration number BB333RBC, driven by one Ishaya Taarfa of 28B Amazon Street, Maiatama, Abuja.

He said the action of the accused caused damage to a Mercedes Benz car, which was going on its lane.

According to the prosecutor, the offence committed by the accused is punishable under Section 28 of the Penal Code Law.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty, and requested for bail.

Following the denial of the allegation, the prosecutor asked the court for a hearing date to enable the police prepare its witnesses and produce its evidence before the court.

In his ruling, Magistrate Zubairu granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with a reasonable surety in like sum that must reside within the court's jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit to produce the accused in court on the adjourned date.

The case was adjourned to July 16 for hearing.
