There is a need to establish a law guiding building of houses in Nigeria to curtail incessant collapse of building in the country, the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has said.

The first Vice President of NIOB, Builder Dachollom Dalyop Jambol told Daily Trust yesterday that until such law is enacted, building would continue to collapse because building is currently handled by non professionals.

Jambol who said the 39th Annual Conference/General Meeting of the association is slated for July 8 to 12, in Benue State, said the association presently have only building code which cannot be enforced because it is yet to be backed by law.

He said: "The building code is not a law; we need a law to give the code a backing. We do not have planning law to support this code; a planning law empowers those who supervise building. We should also have development control law."

He also said that the country need a building research institute that would guide professionals charged with the responsibility of building.

"Presently, research in this country is suffering. We need to have confident in our research, a confident that we can do it", he said.

According to him, government should continue to fund housing instead of handing it over to the private sector.

He said: "For now, government cannot and should not handover housing to the private sector because the cost of mass production of house is too cost. Government uses houses a political tool."
