Nigeria: ANPP Postpones NEC Meeting Indefinitely

3 July 2009

Internal crisis rocking the ranks of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) took a toll on the party yesterday, forcing it to postpone, indefinitely, the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that was to hold in Abuja.

National chairman of the party, Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, told journalist that the meeting was postponed due to many problems confronting the party. He however said that an extended caucus meeting preceding the NEC meeting had set up a committee to look into the problems within two weeks after which the NEC can meet.

However, Daily Trust learned that the caucus meeting witnessed rowdy sessions following insinuations that certain forces wanted to use the occasion to pass a vote of no confidence on the national chairman.

A recent media report had suggested that the Kano State governor, Ibraim Sekarau, is spearheading the move to remove the national chairman from office. But when asked, Ume-Ezeoke denied that there is any such move.

Giving reasons for the postponement of the meeting, the chairman said: "We published notice that we are going to have our NEC meeting today (Thursday), and yesterday (Wednesday) we had our caucus meeting. That is the usual practice in the party, but we had so many pressing issues, and it was extremely impossible for us to conclude all the items we had on the agenda. So the caucus was extended to this morning (yesterday). It was an extended caucus that included other members of the party to help us resolve the various problems afflicting the party for some time now.

"The party looked into the problems extensively and decided to cancel the NEC meeting which was scheduled for today (yesterday) for another day to be announced by the party. Also, the party set up a committee made up of our strong and committed party leaders from all parts of the country to meet and look into all the complaints that were laid before the caucus and make report immediately within two weeks when another caucus meeting would be convened; and the next day after the caucus, we are now going to have our NEC meeting," Ezeoke said.
