An unidentified nursing mother was yesterday burnt to death when the car she was in crashed into a ditch and caught fire beside Equatorial Trust Bank, by Wuse Market Fly over, in Abuja.

An eyewitness said the driver of the Peugeot 505 car with registration number AW 141 ABJ was over speeding.

Another witness, Anthony Ugwuanyi, who said he was driving behind the ill -fated vehicle, disclosed that the car was coming from Maitama and apparently heading towards Mabushi, when the accident happened close to the Wuse Market Bridge.

He said the woman was alone with the driver, whom he accused of over speeding.

"The car suddenly skidded off the road and somersaulted two times before fallen into a ditch and catching fire," he added.

According to him, the driver of the car escaped while the woman was trapped inside the burning car and all efforts to rescue her proved abortive.

A sympathiser, called Blessing said over 30 motorists participated in the rescue operation and tried their best to rescue the burning woman, who was wailing.

"They all sprayed their fire extinguishers in order to control the fire but the fire still burnt her to ashes and all we can do is to pray for her soul," Blessing said amidst tears.

Other sympathisers at the scene wondered why it took officials of the Federal Fire Service a while before they arrived the scene.

Officials of the FRSC, who were involved in the rescue operations refused to talk to the press.

Reacting to the accident, FRSC's Sector Commander in the FCT, Nseobong Akpabio attributed it to over speeding and loss of control of the vehicle.

"The body of the deceased, who was a nursing mother, has been deposited at the hospital, while the driver of the car is a brother to the deceased," he added.

He said FRSC officials contacted the woman's husband to intimate him of the incident.
