Harare — Progress Chipfumo, who is set to fly to Botswana to record his forthcoming album, is looking for new female backing vocalists to replace two female members going on maternity leave.

The auditions will be conducted at Club M5 in Westlea, Harare, tonight. Successful candidates will be announced at the end of tonight's show and they are set to begin work on Monday when the rehearsals heighten.

The Sounds of Motherland boss has also assured the newcomers of handsome perks and a good working environment. "Like any other band that works with ladies, such things are normal that members go on maternity leave.

"We have therefore decided to invite capable female backing vocalists to come and join us for auditions. "We have set-aside also Club M5 as the venue for the auditions since it attracts whose of the arts especially on Fridays owing to its centrality.

"And it being Friday, we do invite members to show up in numbers for this noble cause," he said. He also assured the two members going on maternity leave that they remain part of the 12-piece afro-jazz band.

"As for my two members, they should not feel threatened as continue to be part of us. We have also told them of these developments and they have all agreed," he added. Progress, unlike some of Zimbabwe's top musicians, has been playing unrecorded songs during live shows.

He says he was not afraid of copycats, as he believes in originality. "My duty as an artiste is to give people good music - both new and old material. "I can't hold onto my new songs when people want to hear them because I compose them for their consumption. How could I be selfish?" he asked.

Some of Progress' unrecorded songs make heat waves during live shows include Zvibhakera and Kurumwa Nechekuchera. He has also managed to retain all his band members and notably acclaimed drummer Chinyani, the son of Vuka Boys founder Shepherd Chinyani.

Progress will on Sunday hold another show at Holly's Nite Club.
