Harare — One of the most-wanted suspected armed robbers Samuel White (alias George White), who was recently released on bail but soon returned to his criminal ways, has been re-arrested on new charges of armed robbery, unlawful entry and illegal possession of guns.
White and his accomplice Joseph Mutyandaedza allegedly broke into a Mt Pleasant house and made off with cash and property valued at US$2 475.
The duo is also accused of pouncing on an Emerald Hill family and robbing them of cash and property worth US$26 675 at gunpoint.
Upon his arrest on June 23, White implicated Mutyandaedza as his accomplice in the two cases that occurred in Mt Pleasant and Emerald Hill on March 21 and May 6 this year.
White allegedly committed the crimes after he was released from remand prison.
The pair yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Court to answer the charges.
Regional magistrate Mr Peter Kumbawa remanded them in custody to July 15 for trial before advising them to apply for bail at the High Court. Appearing for the State, prosecutor Mr Takawira Godwin Nyasha alleges that on March 21 year Mr Gregg Alexander Badcock of 15 Dublin Road in Emerald Hill went to Zambia on business, leaving his maid Ms Joyce Katende at the house.
Around 9pm, Ms Katende locked the doors and closed all windows before she retired to bed.
Mutyandaedza and White stormed the house in the dead of the night after jumping the security wall.
While inside, it is the State's case that the two broke into the house and stole a digital safe that contained a pistol, two wrist watches, vehicle keys, four vehicle registration books and four firearms certificates.
On May 6, the two teamed up with Albert Arnold Kwarira who is hospitalised and Felix, who is still at large, and went to Mr Demos Sophocles Demou's house in Mt Pleasant at night.
Mr Demou was having supper in the dining room with his wife, Veronique and a visitor Mr Costas Petrides when the gang entered the room armed with guns.
It is the State's contention that the gang threatened to shoot the three before ordering them to lie on the floor as they ransacked the house. They stole US$2 200 cash, a laptop, two digital cameras, an ipod, four Nokia cellphones, four gold rings, some jewelry and earrings before demanding keys to a Mitsubishi Pajero that was parked outside. They loaded the loot into the Pajero and drove away towards Chitungwiza. They later abandoned the car along Park Lane Street in Harare.
They ran out of luck when Mr Johannes Mudzimba who they had assigned to find buyers for the jewellery reported the case to the police.
