Abuja — Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Parry Osayande, on Thursday observed that the Nigeria Police was not effectively equipped to perform optimally under a democratic setting before 1999.
Osayande made the observation while playing host to a visiting team from Amnesty International (AI), an international human rights organisation, led by Kees Hindriks, a retired Commissioner of Police.
He blamed the past military administrations for the problem. Osayande, however, added that measures to reposition the police for effective and efficient service delivery are already at the implementation stage, insisting that the present single Police Force for Nigeria was best for the country's stability.
He traced the genesis of the current travail of the police to several decades of under-funding, sub-standard and inadequate office and residential accommodation, poor salaries and allowances by successive governments, plus leadership failure within the police itself.

Parry Osayande is still living in the past for blaming military on the ineficient and unprofessional attitude of the Nigarian police force after ten years of democracy in the country, and for him appraising fedral policing alone without state police,he needs to visit ARO .I was expecting him to talked about the multy-dimentional problems confronting the organisation ,from fedral government angle , politicians, house of assembly, the organisation itself and to the corrupt society [because every society deserved the police they have since they are also member of the public] so that solution will be profer to the problem bedevilling the organisation, sometimes I wander why the wind of changes blowing across all organisation in Nigeria left the police alone ,then I equally remembered that corrupt politician needs corrrupt police to win an election,In other to upheld democracy POLICE need to be strong, and for NIGERIAN POLICE to be strong,Fedral government needs to re-structured police, reposition them, audit them, creat state police, improve there welfare and made them profesional.with this police will life up to the task and they will messure up with there counterparts in the developed world.Thanks......OLABOMI ABIODUN
