The Good Governance through Strengthened Media in Liberia operated by the Liberia Media Center and Journalists for Human Rights has hosted a human rights training for community radio stations in Gbarnga, completing a circuit involving all counties in the country. The workshop also brings to a conclusion the first phase of the LMC/jhr program in Liberia.
According to the Program Coordinator, Abdullai Kamara, “over the last eight months the project provided long term and specialized training for Liberian journalists in the areas of journalism, governance, human rights and democracy by seconding journalism trainers to select Liberian media organizations, as well as working with academic institutions to develop journalism curriculum in Liberian tertiary institutions, supporting excellence in journalism through the support of an annual award for good reporting on human rights and governance, the development of a human rights reporting network, among others.”
The Gbarnga workshop included a local human rights situation report from the regional JPC officer, John Luckie, along with journalism lectures from JHR trainers in the country. Similar reports were provided by UNMIL and JPC human rights personnel during previous workshops.
Mr. Kamara added that "the Gbarnga workshop brought together journalists from eight CR stations from Bong and Montserrado Counties, and is the ninth of the series, which has so far benefitted 135 journalists, including 21 females."
He noted that "the emphasis of the workshop is on human rights awareness and good journalism," which he hopes will spur inspirations for good governance and democracy in Liberia.
According to him, previous community radio workshops under this project were held in Harbel, Voinjama, Harper, Sanniquellie, Greenville, Zwedru and Robertsport.
Also during this period, nearly 200 journalism students and student journalists benefited from workshops held with secondary schools in various parts of Monrovia, as well as with the University of Liberia and the AME University.
The project is also working to revise the curriculum for journalism education in Liberia, in collaboration with various tertiary institutions in the country.
The Good Governance Media Project is a five-year media development program implemented by LMC/JHR as part of the Governance and Transparency Fund of the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DfID).
