Windhoek — The risk of an anthrax outbreak in the flood stricken areas in the north motivated the Veterinary Association of Namibia to donate vaccines to the Directorate of Veterinary Services.

The initial funds to purchase the vaccines were supplemented by generous donations from Agra, BAYER and Onderstepoort Biological Products.

The anthrax vaccine, valued at N$25 000, was handed over to Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Libertine Amathila on 29 June.

"These vaccines are intended for disease prevention in flood-stricken areas in the north of Namibia, where anthrax represents a significant health risk to cattle, sheep, and goats as well as humans. This donation will facilitate the vaccination of 25 000 animals and represents tangible evidence of our commitment to the upliftment of animal health in Namibia," said Dr Beggs, president of the Veterinary Association of Namibia at the hand-over.

The Veterinary Association of Namibia consists of approximately 140 registered veterinarians both in private and public practise.

Agra, together with its suppliers, is an important partner to the veterinary profession through its supply of veterinary inputs. Auas Vet Med, a wholesaler and distributor of veterinary pharmaceutical products, provides an animal health consultancy specialised services.

According to Dr Hassel, Agra's animal health consultant, this partnership with the Veterinary Association's initiative is tangible proof of Agra's strategy to get further involved in agriculture in the far northern areas of Namibia.
