Namibia: Ndeitunga Concerned with Alcohol and Drug Abuse

3 July 2009

The Highest ranking policeman in the country is seriously concerned with the increase in drug and alcohol abuse in the country.

Lieutenant General, Sebastian Ndeitunga voiced his concern at the opening of a workshop on alcohol and drug abuse for senior police officers this week.

He also spoke of the growing concern of police officers drinking off-duty and questioning how they can be called to duty in the middle of the night and be fit for duty when they have been drinking.

"All of us have to stand up and fight this problem. If leaders in the different sectors of our society do not set an example then we are infecting our country with drugs and alcohol abuse," said Ndeitunga. He was quick though to reassure the public that the police are working hard to deal with the problem and that his office is receiving "good" results from some regions.

"We have a lack of sniffer dogs at our different border posts, we are receiving good results from our officers around the country and this is very encouraging considering the situation. We need to put in place preventative measures so that we are not a reactive force, we must deal with the suppliers and distributors before the drugs get to the consumer," he said.

Ndeitunga also used the opportunity to call upon the police to deal with the mushrooming of unlicensed shebeens around the country.

"We must enforce the laws that we put in place to guide us as a country. If we do not do this then there will be no rule of law in our society," he said.
