Zimbabwe:Accounts Student Wins Pageant

Harare — UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe student, Kumbirai Ginnel Mabiza, was crowned Miss Biggy-Matofotofo 2009 at the John Mark Hall in Kadoma last weekend.

The 22-year-old model, who is studying Accounts, distinguished herself in all segments: Question and Answer, African tradition and free style. And for her efforts, she walked away with a cow donated by Chegutu businessman Eddie Gahadzikwa of Eddie's Kyte, and vouchers worth US$10 000.

Kumbirai weighs 100 kgs.

Pre-event favourite Chrysler Chingwaru (23) from Harare settled for first princess to earn the US$500 cash prize, plus a live pig, much to the delight of the packed auditorium. Kadoma-based Evangelista Mlilo was voted second princess, while Sandra Zambile is this year's Miss Personality.

All the eight provincial finalists who took part in the event were groomed by Harare-businesswoman and retired model Florence Mehlomakulu.

The instructress, who was also the event manageress, applauded the quality of models who took part this year.

"It was a good experience working with these mature models,´she said. "Hopefully they will put into practice what we taught them.

"Of course, they are big women, but they can still make an impression in modelling and it's a matter of time before people realise this."

Shaina hitmaker Alexio Kawara headlined the occasion with a polished act that left many in awe while Kadoma-based dance group Amanandos put up a show to remember. Television personality Tavonga Mafundikwa was the MC of the night. Pageant organiser Lwazi Mbowa described this year's contest as a huge success.

"It was a good contest. All the contestants came well-psyched for the event," she said.

"I was pleased by the work done by the judges and the crowd simply liked the outcome.

"From now onwards, we are working on the future. We can't afford to rest on our laurels."
