Johannesburg — THE crippling doctors' wage strike that went on for two weeks has come to an end, according to health officials.

Doctors who went on strike demanding more than 50% in pay rises are all expected to return to work today after the government's plea last week that they do so "in the country's interest", though not all their demands had been met, especially their appalling working conditions.

Spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal health department, Chris Maxon, said: "Nobody should still be on strike as far as we know."

He said doctors were supposed to have returned to duty at the weekend . However, the department could not say for certain that all doctors had returned because the announcement about the strike ending was made only late on Friday .

Maxon said even those doctors who were issued with dismissal letters have been reinstated, "so those doctors are to return to work along with the other doctors".

KwaZulu-Natal had dismissed about 300 of the 400 doctors expelled nationwide during the strike.
