Khartoum — Atraco registered their first win of the 2009 Cecafa-Kagame Club Championships in Khartoum after Saturday's 5-0 mauling of Djibouti's Kartileh FC to brighten their chances of squeezing through to the quarter finals.
After losing their opening Group (A) games against El Merreikh (1-6) and Mathare United (1-2), Sam Timbe's boys rose to the occasion with a sounding win that also bettered their goal difference to (-1).
Abedi Hamis Kitagenda netted a brace while Rwandan internationals Jean Shyaka and Abedi Mulenda as well as Ugandan midfielder Johnson Bagoole weighed in with a goal each to leave Timbe delighted.
"The boys have responded well today (Saturday) and we now have to wait and see what happens in the other groups," he said.
The Rwanda league champions are hoping to grasp a quarter-final slot as one of the two best finishers in the three groups.
The other teams in contention for the two slots are Benadir of Somalia, Sudan's Hey Al-Arab, Inter Stars of Burundi and Zanzibar's Miembeni FC.
The tournament, partly sponsored by Rwandan President Paul Kagame has staked $50,000 for the winner while first and second runners-up will pocket $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.
