Abuja — The police in Abuja yesterday said they would investigate individuals and organisations mentioned in documents recovered from a militant camp that was overran during a military operation in the Niger Delta region.
The Police Force Public Relations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ojukwu told Daily Trust that "The militants and their leader, Tompollo when found would have to explain those sponsoring them as well as benifitting from them." Sources in the presidency said Monday that several documents recovered by the military Joint Task Force (JTF) from Camp 5, the base of Okerekoko Ekpomupolo otherwise known as Tompollo, had revealed that a serving governor, top politicians and traditional rulers and even foreigners are core sponsors of the militancy in the region
The documents revealed the foreign contacts for arms purchase and Nigerian middlemen.
It also revealed the dates and minutes of meetings held between the militants and the politicians as well as the list of countries where stolen oil is sold and how the proceeds are shared.
The JTF had declared Tompollo, the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) a wanted man but even though the soldiers have taken over Camp 5 and shelled his house, his whereabouts are still unclear.
