Nigeria: Nema Tasks Nigerians on Disaster Prevention

Kaduna — The Director General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Air Vice Marshal Mohammed M. Audu-Bida (rtd) has tasked Nigerians to always take precautionary measures to forestall the occurrence of disasters.

Audu-Bida who made the call at the opening ceremony of a four day seminar on disaster management organized by the agency in collaboration with the Bournemouth University Disasters Management Centre (BUDMC) for senior managers of the agency in Kaduna said disaster prevention and management was the responsibility of all. "The frequency and intensity of disasters nationally and internationally is due to unpredictable climatic changes, severe flooding, fire, drought, terrorism, epidemics and urbanization especially in developing countries,' he said .

He maintained that proper utilization of scarce resources in the country was required to prevent and mitigate disasters. "To achieve this, we need to embrace internationally accepted approaches based on sound knowledge of disaster management and we must respond to these issues in a coordinated manner", he added.

Alhaji Bida urged participants at the workshop who were drawn from response agencies, including NEMA, Police, Federal Road Safety Commission, Civil Defense, and the Red Cross to share information on how to integrate their institutional plans among themselves to enable them become the new vanguards of disaster management in their respective organizations.
