Zimbabwe: 'Help Us Get Vehicles'

6 July 2009

Harare — Local authorities want Government assistance to acquire three vehicles each from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

Masvingo mayor Clr Femias Chakabuda asked the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Ignatius Chombo to assist the local authorities to purchase the vehicles from the central bank.

Clr Chakabuda was part of a group of mayors, council chairpersons and senior councils' officials who met Min Chombo recently for an interactive meeting.

"We want vehicles. Most of our services are dependent on the availability of vehicles," he said.

He said the vehicles would not be for use by mayors, but for service delivery.

Clr Chakabuda said town clerks and town secretaries and chief executives would pursue the matter with Government and report to their respective councils.

Min Chombo agreed to help the councils to acquire the vehicles and urged them to compile their requirements.

He however, denied the mayors permission to personally drive council vehicles arguing that in the event of an accident, the city fathers would be asked to pay for costs of damages.
