Harare — Harare City councillors and officials have been invited to Botswana to study how a company in that country undertakes waste management activities.
Last Tuesday councillors obviously enticed by the visit to neighbouring Botswana passed a resolution agreeing to partner the company in waste management, tourism and hospitality industry business and quarry mining.
Harare councillors have been very skeptical of joint ventures especially those entered before they assumed office and have been asking for an audit on all deals.
Three weeks ago, members of the business committee were in South Africa to apprise themselves with the operations of a parking system that the city will soon introduce.
The parking business is again being done under a joint venture deal with Easihold Pvt Ltd of South Africa.
But an alert Clr Sasha Jogi questioned the company's profile saying in his history of business he had never come across a company that does so many unrelated business operations.
His colleagues maintained they would assess the company's profile once in Botswana.
Town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi presented a proposal by the city's business development unit asking the city fathers to agree to the partnership with The Facts Pvt Ltd of Botswana for co-operation in waste management and other business interests.
He said besides the co-operation in waste management, the company would assist the city in establishing tourism facilities at Cleveland Dam Park.
He reported that the company had extended an invitation to councillors and officials to visit the company's premises in Botswana and have an overview of its operations.
"That the proposed memorandum of understanding between the city of Harare and The Facts Pvt Ltd of Botswana to explore possible co-operation in waste management, tourism and hospitality industry and quarry mining be approved," reads part of the full council minutes.
