Lagos — Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Friday vowed that there is no going back on the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union until its demands are met by the Federal Government.
President of the union, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, made this known while addressing journalists at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), explaining that the union did not rush into the strike action.
"For two years and half, we despite serious reservations about government's sincerity, did not go on strike. Both sides of the negotiation committee believed that the negotiation was so important for Nigeria's educational development and that the resulting agreement would justify the efforts, restraints and expectations underlying the exercise of collective bargaining, he said."
Speaking of the comment of the Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, he said he has made a number of unfortunate statements recently and in the wake of the union's strike, which was unnecessarily provoked by government's insincerity and insensitivity.
Awuzie, however, said the union is on strike to persuade government to be serious for once and take the interest of its citizens seriously by signing the agreement already reached.
"As a demonstration of this resolution, ASUU has in the past two and half years dialogued, negotiated and lobbied government and those who matter in the education sector for intervention and quick resolution of issues.
