Mendefera — The Administrator of the Southern Region, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein, called on the farming community in the region to adopt modern farming techniques so as to raise productivity.
He pointed out that without being limited to crop production only, farmers should engaged in vegetables and fruits farming as well as animal grazing so as to back up endeavors towards achieving food security.
In a meeting he held with sub-zonal administrators and heads of ministries' branch offices to assess agricultural activities, Mr. Mustafa underlined that the regional Administration would extend the necessary support to farmers.
The Administrator of the Senafe sub zone, Mr. Bereket Tekeste on his part called on the farmers in the area to make good use of the available advantages and resources. Pointing out that 80% of the population in the region make their living from subsistent rain-dependent farming, Head of the Southern region economic development branch, Mr. Zerit Teweldebirhan, indicated that in line with the ongoing efforts to boost agricultural production through modern techniques, around 11,400 hectares has been put under irrigation farming.
Moreover, Mr. Mustafa stated that the government has built over 131 micro-dams with a capacity of holding about 36 million cubic meter of water in a bid to facilitate the introduction of modern farming methods, which in turn would boost animal grazing and fish production.
Encouraged by the promising summer rains, farmers in the region are engaged in rigorous agricultural activities.
