Uganda: Nabukeera Making Good Progress At St Lawrence

Kampala — It is three years since the then 12-year-old Aisha Nabukeera was severely burnt by her stepmother in Masaka. Prospects of her furthering her education appeared bleak at the time. But the little girl, who was a Primary Six pupil at the time of the tragedy, has bounced back strong and determined.

Today she is one of the happiest students at St. Lawrence Horizons Campus. Nabukeera, 15, is in Senior One R at St. Lawrence where she is overwhelmed by the love and support other children have shown her. "Everybody seems to love me and that gives me motivation to continue chasing my dream," she said, "In and out of class, I get all the support I need." Last term Nabukeera was seventh out of 52 students in her class and she is optimistic she can top her class. "Of course, my target is to be number one in my class but even seventh is not bad and my teacher has said I can improve," she said.

Nabukeera is one of the best students in science subjects and she says she wants to become a doctor in the future. "Doctors saved my life, I want to be a doctor," she said. Nabukeera's class teacher Ms A. Lubega says that her student is promising and just needs to keep on working hard. She also praised her for attending all lessons last term. Nabukeera joined St. Lawrence from City Parents Primary School where she sat her Primary Leaving Examinations scoring 14 points.

She had dropped out of Nyendo Public Primary School in Masaka after being burnt. Now Nabukeera is waiting for a skin operation. She has made a remarkable recovery and can now wash clothes and cook food. Her custodian, Mr Frank Gashumba, said that the girl is hard working and buoyant. "She has never felt this good before," he said. "She has gained weight and confidence."
