Uganda: KCC Top Group, Avoid Merreikh

5 July 2009

Kampala — KCC mauled Somali side Benadir yesterday to top Group B and avoid a possible CECAFA Club Championship quarter final encounter against favourites Merreikh and Tusker.

The Ugandan champions, who last won the annual competition 31 years ago, were again in superb form in Khartoum as Robert Ssentongo fired a brace.

The top two teams in each of the three groups advance to the quarter-finals together with the best two qualifiers. KCC will have the privilege of meeting one of the latter on Wednesday.

Diminutive striker Ssentongo opened the scores with his fourth of the tournament in the second minute. Tommy Okello struck the second, Jeremaiah Ssebuyira made it three, Ssentongo grabbed another before Para Othman pulled one back for the losers. Speed merchant Charles Ssemanda struck KCC's fifth.

KCC have nine points from three games, TP Mazembe three from two.
