Nigeria: Medical Centre Gets Open Varsity Affiliation

Lagos — Federal Medical Center, Bida, Niger State has been approved by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to provide a sustainable medium for a bachelor's degree training in nursing.

Disclosing this as part of his achievements during the Annual Health week, which was aimed at renewing the effort of quality health care delivering on a holistic basis, Chief Medical Director of the centre, Dr. Alabi George Okuku, said that consultants have also been hired in the field of specialised clinical practical including hematology histopathology, obstetrics and gynecology, paediatics, urology, pulmanology and nephrology.

The CMD said that as an integral part of the management process, the management of the health institution has given support to the establishment of various co-operative/thrift scheme like the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN).

Okuku further said that the health institution has had to battle with many challenges in the area of improving and sustaining the standard of good clinical practices as it was situated in a rural setting and environment because of the greener pasture syndrome.

Another major challenge, the institution has had to contend with, according to him, was in the area of equipment because of the worsening state of power supply, which he said has been on an unprecedented spate of breakdown of equipment and this has led to the hospital incurring huge amount of maintenance costs .

The hospital's staff strength is expected to rise to 983 by 2011 from it's present 337 members of staff with the strategic plan put in place along with the development of the hospital's permanent site, he disclosed.

The health week 2009 was concluded with an unprecedented array of events with dignitaries who included Minister of State for Health, Dr Idi Hong, Deputy Governor of Niger State represents the governor and senator Zainab Kure.

The health week climaxed with the commissioning of Znnferu Primary Health care center which was built in collaboration with the FiCMB.
