Nigeria: UNICAL Expels Four Students

4 July 2009

Lagos — The authorities of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, have expelled four of the institutions with the royal fathers students while six others were suspended for various cases of gross misconduct.

The expelled students, according to the current edition of the university's bulletin, committed the offence of impersonation while those suspended were involved in examination malpractice.

The bulletin said those expelled were caught writing examination for other students. It gave the names of the expelled students as David Udosat, Sunday Ije, Uwase Usang and Anthony Effiong, all of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology.

Those suspended are Bassey Otosi, Victoria Evahakhobokim, Ime Alfred, David Okwin and Favour Ibua of the Nursing Science Department and Michael Ukattah of Geology Department.

The sanctions imposed on the students, the bulletin stated, was based on the recommendations of the university's disciplinary committee, which investigated their cases.

Meanwhile, the university authorities have approved N120 million for the upgrading and maintenance of its library.

Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Bassey Asuquo, announced this at the opening of the 88th Bi-Annual Conference of the Committee of University Librarians of Nigerian Universities.

Asuquo described the library as the most powerful component of the university system, but expressed regret that the libraries had not fared well due to poor funding.

He called on the management of universities in the country to give more attention to their libraries, saying with adequate and sustained funding, libraries would invigorate the quality of education in our tertiary institutions.
