South Africa: Confident New Airline Expands Services

3 July 2009

Johannesburg — ZAMBEZI Airlines announced plans last month to expand operations as a new regional carrier, beginning with SA and Tanzania.

CEO Cornwell Muleya said: "After assessing market conditions, our shareholders and management took a decision towards the end of last year to upgrade our fleet requirements by leasing two Boeing 737-500 series aircraft."

This was a significant achievement for the privately owned airline which was launched in July last year.

Muleya said "we want to grow the airline through frequency and then expand our network through beneficial partnerships with other carriers".

Muleya said the focus would not be exclusively on price. "Our people are selected based on key competencies and our frontline staff is trained to offer a professional and high standard service the Zambian way."

The company said chairman and owner Maurice Jangulo, a successful businessman throughout the Southern African Development Community, conceived the idea of the airline many years ago. Zambezi Airlines commenced with a full schedule last month.

The airline will have double daily flights on the Lusaka-Johannesburg route, four flights a week between Ndola and Johannesburg, three flights a week between Livingstone and Johannesburg, and three flights from Lusaka to Dar-es-Salaam.
