Zambia: Sondashi Launches Political Party

6 July 2009

FORMER Cabinet minister in the MMD Government, Ludwig Sondashi has launched his own party the, Forum for Democratic Alternatives (FDA).

Launching the party in Kitwe yesterday, Dr Sondashi said he decided to form the party so that people could have a choice from the many existing political parties in Zambia.

Dr Sondashi alleged that a number of things in the country had gone wrong and, as such, he was offering an alternative for change.

"I welcome all political parties in Zambia, including the MMD, but what I am doing is that I am launching this party so that people should have a choice," Dr Sondashi said.

He said what was important for any political party was not for them just to aim at unseating the ruling party but to know what next.

Dr Sondashi said he had intentions of retiring from politics but what made him not to do so were the many problems facing the nation which, he claimed, he wanted to sort out before dying.

"We elderly people have created problems for this nation and that is why I can't go until I reverse them," he said.

He said as far as he was concerned, forming a new political party in the midst of several others was not a big issue because what mattered was not the number of these parties on the political scene but the quality of leadership they offered.

Dr Sondashi said the FDA had resolved not to be a mere participant in the 2011 elections.

He said the FDA had come on the political scene to make an impact, alleging that a number of 'big' people wanting to join the party had already approached him.

Dr Sondashi, who acknowledged that power was sweet but that he was not hungry for it, claimed that he was resigning from the previous governments but that he was now settling for the presidency so that his wife and children could also enjoy.
