THE Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) electoral pact have picked Chanda Mutale as its candidate in the Chitambo parliamentary by-election.
The Chitambo parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of area member of Parliament and Lands deputy minister, Nasim Hamir in May.
Speaking at a Press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, PF spokesperson Given Lubinda said the candidate in the by-election scheduled for August 13 was a resident of Chitambo who understood the problems of the area better.
As a result, he said Mr Mutale would emerge victorious.
"I wish to inform the people of Chitambo that the PF/UPND has now an additional number of MPs.
"The man I am presenting to you was born in Chitambo and lives in the area. At 34, he has built a house in the area. He is a businessman and a qualified auto mechanic," Mr Lubinda said.
He said the selection process for the candidate was competitive, saying Mr Mutale was chosen on merit.
Mr Lubinda said the fact that the UPND allowed the PF to come up with a candidate was an indication that the pact was strong and ready to form the next government.
He, however, said despite that, the UPND/PF would emerge victorious and that this Wednesday, MPs from the two parties would be camped in Chitambo.
Mr Lubinda also wondered why the MMD candidate, Solomon Musonda has not resigned from the civil service.
He said Dr Musonda was still a medical doctor in the civil service and the Government had allegedly allowed him to be campaigning using public resources.
He said if the Government was serious about fighting corruption, it should ensure that Dr Musonda was relieved of his duties.
Speaking during the same occasion, Mr Mutale said he was humbled for being chosen as the candidate for the PF/UPND and was confident of emerging victorious.
He also said the people of Chitambo had suffered for many years because they elected into office wrong candidates.
With him as their representative, he said the people of Chitambo were assured of development.
