Angola: Chief Justice Announces Increase Tendency in Number of Convicts

6 July 2009

Ndalatando — The Supreme Court Chief Justice, Cristiano André, on Sunday in Ndalatando, northern Kwanza Norte Province, said that there is a tendency for an increase in the number of women convicted for involvement in criminal activities.

Speaking to the press, in the end of a three-day work visit to Kwanza Norte, Cristiano André explained that this conclusion comes in view of a series of reports and checked situations in the various provinces of the country.

He gave as example the central prison of Ndalatando, in which 16 women are detained, fifteen of whom have already been convicted.

The Chief Justice said it is fundamental that the inmates be conscious about the consequences they face when they commit crimes and learn from the example of the time they spend in jail.
