Uganda: KCC Cruise Ahead

Kampala — KAMPALA City Council (KCC) edged closer to the quarter-finals of the CECAFA Clubs Championships with a commanding 3-1 victory over Prsions as Congolese side TP Mazembe and defending champions Tusker FC displayed similar ruthlessness on a high-scoring (Friday) night in the championships.

With Friday's results, KCC, 3-2 winners over Mazembe in their opening match, sailed to the quarter-finals with the maximum six points. Mazembe with three points, Benadir and Prisons, (both on one) all have the chance of joining them depending on results of their final group matches today.

Mazembe, here as guests and using the tournament to shape up for the group round of the African Champions League were on fire hitting a hard fighting Benadir Telecom from Somalia 8-1 at the Khartoum Stadium.

Hundreds of kilometres away in Port Sudan, Tusker hit Miembeni from Zanzibar 6-0 in a Group C tussle.

In Group B, El Merreikh from Sudan and Mathare United from Kenya have the maximum six points and have confirmed their quarter-final places.

In Group C, Tusker with four points guaranteed their qualification while Miembeni with three, El Arab two and Inter Stars one all can still qualify.

The best two teams from each group will be joined by the best two losers for the quarters.

Mazembe snatched the lead in the eighth minute when Basisila Lusadisu started the rout.

But Benadir, who were boosted by the presence of five Kenyans in their line-up, pulled level in the 15th minute when Mussa Mohamed scored from the spot after Hussein Kariuki was fouled in the box.

Ndonga Mianga (29th), Kabunga Mulota, Kasongo Ngadu (46th), Tresor Mputu (60th), Kanda Amukok (62nd) and Dioko Kaliyutuka (85) were also on target.

Benadir tactician Mohamed Ali blamed his defeat on the absence of injured Kamal Omar but promised victory against Kampala City Council on Sunday.

Diego Gorzitto the TP Mazembe coach said they applied speed to run down their opponents.

"There was a lot of tongue lashing after we lost to KCC resulting in my resting eight of the players who started that game. Instructions were that we must win against Benadir," said the coach. Their loss against KCC was the first in 29 matches. They are faced with a must win tussle against Prisons and Diego says winning "is mandatory".

KCC scored the tournament's fastest goal so far when Robert Sentogo slammed home within 47 seconds. Shaban Mtupah pulled level in the 13th minute but the Ugandans restored their lead in the 38th minute through Tonny Okello. Sentongo sealed Prisons' fate in the 88th minute heading home between a defender and the goalkeeper.

KCC coach George Nsimbe said they will not be relenting when they take on Benadir despite already having made the quarter finals.

KCC 3 Prisons 1

Benadir 1 TP Mazembe 8

Miembeni 0 Tusker 6

Inter-Stars 1 Hey El-Arab 1
