A MONTHLY soccer tournament to consolidate the existing peace and unity in Warri South Local Government Area was weekend, flagged off at the Federal Government College football pitch, Warri.
The competition which is the first to be organised by the local government since its creation is tagged: "Warri South Inter-Community Cup."
In an address at the occasion, Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Hon. Mofe Edema, explained that apart from discovering and developing budding soccer talents in the area, the tournament will complement the state government's peace and security agenda.
While promising that the soccer fiesta will be an annual event, the council boss thanked corporate bodies that have so far partnered the council even as he enjoined others to do same.
Delta State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Bernard Okumagba, the state PDP Vice-Chairman in charge of Delta South, Hon. Kenneth Efejuku and the Chairman, Agbarha CDC, Chief Israel Abido, commended the initiative of the council boss as the Council Supervisor for Community Development, Youths, Sports and Culture, Mr. Festus Okoloko, told newsmen that a total of 21 communities registered for the tournament expected to climax August 1, this year.
High point of the opening ceremony was a novelty football match which saw Okere Urhobo Community Football team defeating Ogisi United FC of Okere 1-0.
