Angola: Supreme Court Committed to Implementing Presidential Pardon

5 July 2009

Ndalatando — Supreme Court Chief Justice, Cristiano André, has pledged in Ndalatando, the institution's commitment in supervising the application, by provincial courts, of the pardon and commutation of sentences to prisoners under this year's decree by Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.

The magistrate ensured that his trip to Kwanza Norte province aims fundamentally at evaluating and supervising the execution of pardon and commutation of sentences to prisoners jailed in the province.

The presidential decree pardons sentences under 12 years and correctional sentences to every convict, which has already spent half of the sentence until 31 of March of 2009.

The clemency does not cover convicts with very serious crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, military crimes punished by maximum penality.

Cristiano André, in the province since Friday, travelled Saturday to Ambaca district (about 180 kilometres northeast of Ndalatando), to supervise the judicial institution work.

Besides meeting judicial magistrates, Supreme Court Chief also visited the Kwanza Norte Penitentiary and the provincial crime investigation office.
