Lagos — Board of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) said on Sunday in Abuja that the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) project was one of the best in Africa.
Chairman of the board, Abubakar Baraje, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after a facility tour of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
"I can tell you categorically that we have a state-of-the-art equipment at the airport, and that the TRACON equipment is one of the best in Africa and the world.
"This is due to President Umaru Yara'Adua's commitment to ensuring that Nigeria's airspace is safe, thereby building passengers confidence in flying," he said.
The project was completed and inaugurated early in the year to aid air traffic controllers in controlling the landing and take-off of aircraft at the nation's airports.
Baraje, who is also the National Secretary of peoples Democratic (PDP), said the TRACON project for Lagos airport has been completed, while those of Kano and Port Harcourt airports are ongoing.
He promised that no effort would be spared to ensure that Nigeria's airspace was safe in the drive to attract more investors to the country.
The chairman said machinery would be put in place to ensure that the equipment were maintained to enhance their life span.
"NAMA will not leave the equipment to rot because we are going to maintain them and there is a committee on ground that is looking at the facilities," he added.
On capacity building, Baraje said: "We are going to embark on constant training of our staff to ensure that they can man the equipment and meet global challenges.
"We want to bring revolution to NAMA because it is the live wire of the aviation industry and so it must be unique."
