Cameroon: President Biya Precises Government Objectives

«The President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, chaired an important Council of Ministers meeting today, Friday, 3 July 2009 at 11 a.m. The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, Vice-Prime Ministers, Senior Ministers, Ministers and Secretaries of State as well as close aides of the Head of State.

The meeting had a single agenda item, namely the special statement by the Head of State.

The President of the Republic extended his warm congratulations to the members of the new government team and reminded each and every one that the general objective of the Government remains to develop our country and improve the living conditions of Cameroonians as outlined within the framework of the policy of Greater Achievements.

The President of the Republic pointed out the effects of the global crisis on major sectors of our economy such as timber and cotton. He however underscored that our economy has not been hit as much as other economies.

To consolidate the growth underway, with the recovery of the global economy, the Head of State spelt out the main economic thrusts of Government action in the short term, namely:

- acceleration of the implementation of the energy development programme;

- revival of agro-industrial projects;

- completion of industrial and mining projects severely affected by the crisis;

- strengthening of the infrastructure development programme to address the needs expressed by the population.

To support this economic policy, he urged the ministers to speed up the consumption of appropriations while showing proof of rigour, to ensure the judicious management of resources put at their disposal and to guarantee economic operators better access to credit.

He also reiterated the need to pursue efforts in the domains of education, health and access to basic social services.

In this connection, he recommended the revival of "road maps" to ensure better follow-up.

Furthermore, the Head of State recommended the pursuance of the fight against inertia and corruption which hamper Government action.

Lastly, he recalled the need for solidarity and cohesion which guarantee the effectiveness and success of the policy of Greater Achievements.

The President of the Republic adjourned the meeting at 11.20 a.m."
