Shey Peter Mabu
6 July 2009
Barely three days after the June 30, 2009 Cabinet reshuffle, President Paul Biya in the first meeting with the new government prescribed measures aimed at redressing a disturbing trend of national affairs.
"My objective remains the same, namely to ensure the development of our country and improve the living conditions of our population through the policy of "Greater Achievements."
This declaration makes clear why the president after regretting the negligible results so far attained despite some efforts made, frankly spelt out the sectors to be judiciously tackled to render more meaningful his policy of "Greater Achievements."
An undertaking is considered an achievement if the objectives that triggered its conception are attained.
In this light, President Biya could not have ended his first cabinet meeting with the new government without spelling out the thrusts of his economic policy, and cautioning against the societal ills that constitute a wet blanket to our endeavours.
The ingredients of economic development; energy, agriculture, infrastructure, industrial development, mineral research and exploitation are challenges that must be tackled with patriotic commitment to all that is undertaken.
Yet, such a spirit can hardly be embraced and the expected results attained if citizens are not dynamic enough to vigorously combat corruption, and inertia which make it difficult to plan and invest even when funds are available.
Last Friday's cabinet meeting in which President Biya prescribed measures that must be implemented to improve living standards of compatriots and boost the development of Cameroon reminds members of Government and all citizens to constantly take stock of national challenges, identify their areas of contribution to a redress of the situation, and get on to action expected of them.
Such contributive action in response to prescriptions such as those of last Friday should be as spontaneous as Cameroonians' rush to celebrate with those who have been appointed to high posts of responsibility including a place in government. For, it is only through genuine support to help a friend succeed that we can give him a chance to demonstrate the confidence the Head of State has confided in him. Besides, it is through such support that we portray our loyalty to national institutions.
President Biya's instructions to the new government to face with courage and sincerity the challenging tasks of nation-building do not concern only his members of government, but all Cameroonians conscious of the fact that nation-building demands the contribution of all citizens.
In this light, it is expedient to identify our shortcomings, size up our efforts toward a redress and embrace challenges for development. For, it is not enough to regret our shortcomings and past traumas without genuine contributions to usher in changes for the better.
