Gambia: VP Njie-Saidy Receives UN Adviser, Ex-Waho Director

The vice president and minister for Women's Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, yesterday, received in her office at State House in Banjul, Alieu Jah, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) adviser to ECOWAS, who is based in Abuja, Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists shortly after his audience with Vice President Njie-Saidy, the UN official said that their dicussion was centered on disaster issues in West Africa. According to him, during the vice president's participation in a disaster programme that was held in Geneva, Switzerland, some time ago, she had made appeals for the international community to intervene in Africa's disaster reduction campaign. Jah reiterated that from now on, the UN will pay more attention to The Gambia in terms of disaster risk reduction and climate change issues. He further explained that the UN will mobilise more funding to address disaster issues in Africa.

The vice-president, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy Njie-Saidy, yesterday also received Dr Kabba T Joiner, former director of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO). Dr Joiner, after his audience with the vice president, told waiting journalists that he came to express his sincere appreciation to the vice president for the tremendous support she accorded him during his (Dr Joiner's) time as WAHO director.

According to him, the vice president hadgiven crucial support to the organisation at different fora by giving ideas that made the organisation stronger. During his tenure as WAHO director, Dr Joiner said, he worked with committed staff with different skills and from diverse fields, who were working tirelessly for the realisation of the organisation's set target goals. Expressing his desire for the enhancement of health issues in West Africa, he reiterated the need for the sub-region to address health and its related issues adequately.
