Gambia: Liberating the People

Daily Observer

3 July 2009

editorial

Every true revolution is a program and is derived from a new principle. The first thing is to accept that principle. Its development must then be confined to those who are believers in it.

Such a revolution recognizes that the authority of the struggle has to be derived from the will of the people because it is from their experience that the revolution was executed.

It is this type of revolution that The Gambia enjoys. The July 22nd Revolution has spread out to every town, village and home. It gets bigger everyday by integrating the people. It becomes more expandable and strongly fixed in the ground and has shown to the whole word that what has taken place in the Gambia was due to popular demand. The masses are increasingly at the centre stage of governance.

We must not forget that it was the July 22nd Revolution that for the first time gave Gambians the opportunity to author and adopt our constitution, established the Independent Electoral Commission, revamped our fading culture, and boosted agricultural production just to mention a few achievements. This is what the empowerment of the citizenry entails. The nation is heading towards food self-sufficiency, and for the first time in the annals of our history, Gambians have our own constitution based on the principles and standards of our social norms, values and culture.

Let us all bear in mind President Jammeh's words that there is still more need for attitudinal change so that together, we can speed up our development and transform The Gambia into the Silicon Valley of Africa. The Gambia belongs to all Gambians, both at home and abroad. Complementing the efforts of the president anywhere and at any level is in our best interest.
