Ghana: Business Slows Down At Tamale CNC

Edmond Gyebi

3 July 2009

Tamale — Business activities at the Northern Regional Centre for National Culture (CNC), near the Tamale Jubilee Park, have been very slow and unimpressive. Several artifacts including leather sandals, leather bags, idols, wallets, carvings, ceramics, smocks and tie and dye, as well as other designs depicting the northern culture and tradition, are usually displayed at the centre.

However, the artists and designers there told Northern File that business had been very slow, simply due to the inability of the officials of the centre to organise regular programmes and entertainment activities that would attract people to visit the place.

"The more programmes are organised here, and people troop to this place, they will definitely get attracted to our nice designs and artifacts."

The artists and designers are therefore calling for the immediate rehabilitation of the centre, to meet its standard as the place for the display/showcase of northern culture, custom and traditions.

The Tamale CNC has not been functioning as expected, even though it is situated in the centre of the Tamale Metropolis, where several interesting activities could be organised to attract the numerous tourists who troop to the area for various reasons each day.

The structure looks very old and unattractive to passersby. The whole environment of the CNC becomes inaccessible during rainy seasons.

When the Northern File visited the place it observed that the work on the building, which was undergoing rehabilitation works some two years, had come to a standstill.
