Tanzania:Coach Says Athletics Meet Was a Shame

4 July 2009

Arusha — Tanzania should hire qualified coaches to train young talents and introduce Physical Education in schools if the country wants to have an impact in the world of sports.

This was the observation of athletics coaches interviewed after the just concluded National Championships held at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam last weekend, reports the Daily News.

John Manyama said it was appalling to see young athletes failing to perform at their utmost level, because they lacked pre requisite training. "If you tell some one from Kenya that this is national championships, he will simply laugh at you. He said most regions lacked necessary preparations because the performance is very low.

Apart from usual big names, nothing new can be seen here," he lamented. Arusha's coach John Bayo blamed poor organisation of the championship. "This is nothing even compared to the Arusha Regional Competition. The competition is of very low standard. It's a shame. "Everything is in shambles, including seeding of athletes, time recording... I don't know where they got these officials from," complained the former national athletics team coach.

German expert Peter Hans Thumm insisted that the subject of Physical Education, as "the mother of sports" in general and athletics in particular is far from being recognized, as the most important basic requirement for sport.

He said for the past several years, thousands of students were denied a regular opportunity to expose their motor abilities, after the stop for all athletic competitions in the schools, saying the decision had worsened the situation and consequently athletic clubs and the national federation are lacking the necessary supply of talents
