Kenya: Leopards Melt in Coast Heat

4 July 2009

Nairobi — Despite recruiting vigorously in the mid-season transfer window, AFC Leopards are yet to find a winning combination after they were clawed 2-0 by Bandari in Mombasa, as the second leg of the Kenyan Premier League resumed on Saturday.

Sher Karuturi 1 Agrochemicals 2

The visiting Agrochemicals started their second leg of the Kenyan Premier League matches on a winning note when they shocked hosts Sher Karuturi 2-1 in their own backyard at "Old Trafford" stadium in Naivasha on Saturday.

Despite taking an early lead after 18 minutes courtesy of Allan Otindo, Sher could only watch as their advantage eluded them.

Edward Nandi for Agrochemicals scored in each half to ensure the maximum points. In the 26th minute, the visitors were on equal terms when Nandi leveled the scores before halftime. Although the hosts were enjoying more ball possession, they couldn't convert that to goals, as Nandi bagged his second in the 57th minute to deny their hosts the three vital points.

Ulinzi 0 Red Berets 0

Ulinzi Stars and Red Berets battled to a goalless draw in an evenly contested KPL match match played at Oserian Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams started the match with urgency but lacked the killer punch upfront. Former international Tom Ogweno released a hard shot in the 80th minute that was parried into a fruitless corner by the Red Berets goal keeper Stephen Odundo.

Stima 1 Nairobi City Stars 1

Western Stima were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Nairobi City Stars in a tough second leg tie played at Bukhungu stadium.

In the first half, Stima created several clear chances but failed to convert them as result of poor finishing in the attack.

After a goalless first half, newly acquired, Anthony Kimani from Sofapaka FC, put the visitors in the lead a minute after resumption with a low drive outside the box which went past keeper David Juma.

The City Stars were on song in the second half with newly signed Kimani and Collins Tiego combining well with Francis Thairu in the attack but were kept in check by the splendid defending by their opponents.

The Kakamega-based side couldn't imagine losing their first return match as they kept on pressing for an equalizer. Well, that moment came when Peter Okoyo replied after he curved in a cross from the right flank which floated in the back of net in the 59th minute.

Bandari 2 AFC Leopards 0

Bandari FC started the second leg of the premier league on a winning note hitting unlucky AFC Leopards 2-0 at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium.

In this match which could have gone either way, Bandari were outplayed by a new-look Leopards particularly in the second half.

The hosts created two chances in the first half and fully made good use of them giving new coach Yusuf Chippo and his assistants Salim Mwandawiro a perfect welcome.

"This was a very tough match, but I'm delighted at the results. Despite the win, there are areas that we will have to improve before our next match," said Bandari's coach, Chippo.

Leopards could have gone in front in the sixth minute when Charles Okwemba was put through by danger-man Tumba Lauret but has his shot saved by Abdilahi Adam before crossing the line with goalkeeper Joseph Ruto well beaten.

Itubu Imbem and Ken Wamgwe combined well for another chance in the 15th minute but missed the target with the entire Bandari defense misplaced.
