Angola: Govt Presence At G8 Summit Essential

6 July 2009

Luanda — Angola's participation at the G8 summit, to happen from July 08-10 in L'Aquila city (Italy), is a "very important and prestigious" mark for the country.

This was considered by the US ambassador to Angola, Dan Mozena, who said that he recently analysed this issue with the Angolan President, José Eduardo dos Santos.

Speaking to ANGOP, the diplomat stressed that Angola was invited to this summit not only due to chairing the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), but also due to the socio-economic growth rates being recorded in the recent years.

According to the source, Angola and other African countries were invited to this conference in order for the G8 to working jointly with them with view to solve the financial crisis and other problems affecting the world.

Financial aid and testimonies on matters relating to economic development in Africa are, according to the source, some of the sources to be debated at the meeting.

"It is a very important opportunity for Angola to be assisted in diversifying its economic and re-launch itself", he added.

Apart from Angola, the other African countries invited to the summit are South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and Senegal.
