Liberia: Speed Up - Minister Woods Warns CICO

The Ministry of Public Works has called for the speedy and continuous implementation of works on the Vai Town Bridge and Monrovia Streets in the wake of the slow pace of work by the contractor.

The Public Works Minister, Mr. Samuel Kofi Woods II has requested the China Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO) management to make available the present status of mobilization including but not limited to financial and human resources. Minister Woods stressed that any further delay in the execution of the ongoing works is absolutely unacceptable.

Minister Woods made the call on Thursday at his Lynch Street Office when CICO Managing Director Liu Libo visited him in Monrovia.

The China Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO) has renewed its commitment that contract for the 24km of Monrovia Street will be completed on schedule.

The CICO Managing Director Liu Libo at the same time admitted that the construction of Vai Town Bridge is delayed and that they are exploring effort to mitigate the delays including the provision of additional equipment and increase manpower.

At the same time, the Public Works boss has announced series of immediate intervention on several community roads in Monrovia. The Minister said these measures are intended to address the deteriorating state of several roads in Monrovia during the heavy down pull of rain. The Minister admitted that long-term sustainable intervention is not possible during the heavy rain that these are short term measures.

He named the community roads as Red light /Paynesville, Barnesville road, A. B. Tolbert Road and Old Road which requires drainage works.

He caution motorist to adhere to measures intended to alleviate traffic congestion.

In addition, a brigade to respond to emergency road works during this rainy season has been formed and is headed by Assistant Minister for Construction, Honorable Napoleon Chattah. The Public Works Minister mandated the brigade to respond swiftly and promptly to all emergency needs of the public and called for community mobilization and support due to the limited resources available to the Ministry.

Meanwhile, demolition of all make-shift structures around the Vai Town Bridge is expected to be carried out early next week. This will enable the contractors assumed full unencumbered access to the project areas in order to accelerate reconstruction work.
