Uganda: Okebe is Down to Earth

Nathan Banton Okebe is the newly elected Guild President of Nkumba University. He was also the secretary general of NRM at the University, youth mobiliser for central Uganda . He took part in ousting of the Lord's Resistance A rmy rebel leader Joseph Kony out of Soroti.

What were you like as a child?

I was a young stubborn boy who used to disturb teachers but a down to earth person. My school experiences have contributed a lot in my being the guild President.

What does it feel like to be the Guild President?

It's really great because it opens opportunities for your future career. It helps you meet various people from different parts of the world.

Did you have a toy?

Yes, I had a toy gun because I wanted to be a soldier when I grew up.

Did you cry all the time?

Yes I cried because I was too stubborn I used to disturb my parents and teachers.

What inspired you as a child?

My mum used to care about me despite my stubborn character. She always kept praising me and told that I could make it in life.

Any childhood memories?

I can't forget the day I was the 3rd best pupil in class. It was in 1992 when I was in primary two. My mother bought me many Christmas presents for making her proud.

What activities did you participate in while at school?

I was an all round sportsman who engaged in volley ball, football, boxing among other activities. I was also a good scout. This earned me a name throughout my primary.

What is the funniest thing you did as a child?

I acted as Museveni's bodyguard during independence celebrations at school that impressed the people who had turned up for the function. I used broken swahilli and saluted comically and when I left the stage, the guests still demanded for more entertainment.

What makes you happy?

I feel great when people talk about me positively because it means I have contributed to society.

How do you spend your leisure time?

I enjoy watching football on television and hang out with friends.

What was your best TV program

I loved football made in German and a popular local drama by Gayaza high school dubbed 'play the riddle' by students featuring the life of the late Philly Bongole Lutaaya. It was indeed fun and an educational serie.

Schools attended

I went to Gaddafi army barracks primary school in Jinja for my primary one to five from where I went t Magaret grant preparatory school in Kampala were I sat for my primary seven. I then joined Bulooba high school for my O-level and Lakeside college Luzira for my A level. I am a third year student offering law at Nkumba University.

Advice for children?

I urge the children to be God fearing, and not fear to realize their dream careers because everything can be possible if they are confident, competent and creative
