This past Friday, one of the longest-running Btv shows, My Star talent show finally concluded with pomp as the final top three were eventually announced.
It was a massively attended show, with revellers even spilling out of the Btv auditorium where the show is recorded every Friday before being aired on Sunday.
There is no doubt members of the public lent their support to the show, as they had been coming in droves on Fridays for the eliminations.
They parted with their P25 every Friday at the entrance.
While a show like this has to be applauded, we would love to urge its producers to take stock of this production and fine-tune it to the level it deserves to be. We understand Mascom, the largest cell phone company in Botswana, bankrolls this show, now in its third year. This is, indeed, welcome.
However, it is worth noting that in terms of broadcast quality, the production of this show has not progressed into an enigma it is supposed to be. The broadcast quality has been appalling, to say the least, while it was expected to show that indeed money has been coming into the company that produces this show over the last three years.
There is no reason why the production quality cannot rival SA Idols, and we hope the time has now come when the owners of the show can look back and do their utmost to invest in the project. There had been times when the singers' vocals were inaudible, either due to poor microphones or poor engineering, while the picture quality has been a huge disappointment on many occasions.
We want to take this time to encourage the citizens behind this show to benchmark with similar TV shows in South Africa and around the world to give the so passionate Btv audience value for their time and money.
We would also like to thank Mascom, a local company, for giving local brains the opportunity to showcase what they are capable of doing. Mascom supports a similar show in My African Dream talent show, which also airs on Btv.
The national broadcaster also deserves commendation for the patience and support lent to the producers of the show.We can only hope and wish that Btv extend similar privileges to other citizens' initiatives relating to family fun programming like the My Star show.
We are aware that ever since the talent show started three years ago, it is yet to produce a star of note. However, it is clear that the likes of Kitso, Naledi, and Dineo, can be something of an enigma, with the necessary support, of course.
