Ghana: Miss Ghana USA 2008 to Promote HIV/Aids Education in Ghana

6 July 2009

Accra — Miss Ghana USA 2008-2009, Miss Krstyle Simpson is to visit Ghana soon to embark on an HIV/AIDS education programme as part of her project to reach out to the less privileged.

While in Ghana Miss Simpson will be promoting the activities of her charity, Gold Star, a Christian-based organization focused on the education and support of women and children.

Gold Star is devoted to promoting the love of God and the love of each other as well as encouraging general reading and writing in specific subjects that are of interest to the less fortunate people of Ghana.

"Gold Star draws inspiration to do this through Mathew 6: 25-36. We want to know what interest them and try to find books and other materials that they can read to get more information and knowledge about their interest," Miss Simpson, states.

She is thankful to God for her Ghanaian roots and is proud and honored to represent Ghana as Miss Ghana-USA.

According to her, her organization also promote women empowerment in all areas of life, especially in government and business, and HIV/AIDS.

In relation to HIV/AIDS, Gold Star seeks to educate people on all protective and preventative measures of the disease and other STDs. Further, it wants to support infected women during and after their pregnancy.

"Gold Star will be encouraging and promoting various HIV/AIDS programs that focus on building women's assertiveness on the practice of getting themselves and their partners tested before any sexual activity begins."

She added that it is time for Africa to speak openly about HIV/AIDS and related diseases through the media, saying that, "Children are the future of Ghana. A large number of children living in poverty will and are adopting poor behavior and practices, which leads to HIV infections. Gold Star is taking steps to support poverty stricken children and women."

She said this will be done through media campaigns, social marketing and networking and peer education and small group counseling.

Besides, she said that Gold Star helps train women during political campaigning to get into public office and to develop their skills for policy-making, including access to research and analysis.

Miss Simpson said Gold Star is also affiliating with different corporations that can encourage and support women to pursue top corporate business positions and political positions in order to broaden their scope.

"Most importantly we want to promote equal broadcasting representation for women in the media to help erase notoriety in the media."

Gold star believes that the only way people can accomplish their goals is to look to God to guide them through their journey in life and to continuously ask for direction and believe in themselves and his ability to make the impossible possible.
