Kenya:Top Amateur Karano Reclaims Ladies' Strokeplay Title At Royal

Nairobi — Kenya's leading amateur golfer Mary Karano fired four over par 76, thanks to a birdie at the 17th hole of the final round to re-claim the Mary Nevill trophy during this year's Kenya Ladies Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Royal Nairobi Golf Club during the weekend.

The handicap five Karano, a winner of the trophy in 2005, 2006 and 2007 had dropped three shots in the front nine of yesterday's final round of the 54-hole championship that attracted players from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

She later bogeyed the 10th and 14th but holed in a two at the 17th and chipped to about a foot at the 18th for an easy par after over shooting the green for one over par and an all rounds total of 232 having shot 78 each in the first round to win by five shots from Florence Maina who posted 78, 79 and 80.

"I am so happy with my short game which was basically the reason why I played well" said Karano.Round one leader Jane Njoroge who picked up a double bogey at the 18th for 80 and a total of 238 took the third prize.

Dar es Salaam Gymkhana's Hawa Wanyeche was the top foreign player in sixth place on 242 while defending champion Flavia Namakula finished a distance 10th place with rounds of 88, 83 and 80.

Jane Karuku won the Bronze title with 280 gross and finishing in second place was one of the Juniors from Rose Naliaka Golf Academy Naomi Wafula on 286 while the former Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairman Amarjeet Patel who sponsored this year's championship through Wilderness Lodges limited was third on 290.

Limuru's Mwongeli Nzioka won the Dolan Bowl for those in handicap 10 to 20 with 255 gross while Vet Lab's Ann Mululu retained the Sigona Quaich for handicap 21 to 35 with a score of 290 gross. In the handicap division(nett), Archana Patel was the Silver Division nett champion where she posted nett 220 to win by one shot from home player Sarah Hoare.

At Limuru: Sam Kariuki playing off handicap 16 posted 18 and an excellent 24 for 42 to win the amateur title during the KCB Pro-Am Tour sixth leg at the beautiful Limuru Country Club's par 71 course where he beat a large field of 240 players.

James Mburu Muigai now playing off four, posted 20 and 21 to take the second prize on countback from Daniel Kimemia (22, 19).

At Muthaiga top amateur Collins Omondi returned a three-rounds total of 119 points to win the marathon one-day 54-hole Energizer Bull In Season tournament during the weekend.

The Junior title went to Salim Juzer with 96 points while the rounds one and two winners were Amit Chandaria (44) and Walsh Irungu on 40 and winning the third was Macharia Irungu on 39.

The subsidiary title went to Hetul Chandaria with 42 points and in second place was Chandu Shah on 41 and Joe Muriithi won the best effort prize with 65 points.
