Kigali — Rwanda Government has imposed a ban on exportation of unprocessed fish to ensure the sector attracts investors in processing plants. In fisheries' speak, processed fish should be salted, smoked or parked.
Officials from Rwanda Revenue Authority revealed this during training of journalists on the East African Customs Union at Sports View Hotel in Kigali last week.
Early 1990, Uganda imposed a ban on exportation of unprocessed fish to Kenya, and this saw some fish processing plants that used to source fresh fish from Uganda shift base to Uganda .
Officials from the fisheries department said as Rwanda joins the East African Community customs union, the country is also applying the same rules, although she has nothing to export yet as most of the lakes are depleted of the fisheries resource.
With most lakes depleted, Rwanda heavily depends on imported fish from Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania. Fisheries officials said 90% the fish Rwanda depends on is imported fish.
