Abuja — The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has said it will no longer tolerate any excesses perpetuated by health maintenance organisations (HMOs).
Executive secretary of the scheme, Dr Muhammed Dogo who said this threatened to sanction any organisation found wanting in the course of providing health care to its clients.
"My administration's aim is to provide quality healthcare to Nigerians and anyone who distorts this will be sanctioned," a press statement signed by the schme's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ayo Osinu quoted the executive secretary as speaking through the General Manager, Accreditation and Inspectorate of the scheme, Dr Hope Uweja during a regular NHIS-HMOs meeting in Abuja.
Dr Dogo said an enforcement division had already been created to specifically monitor activities of the HMOs.
He reiterated the resolve of NHIS to expand coverage through the implementation of the Community-Based Social Health Insurance Programme (CBSHIP), which blueprint has been approved by the Federal Government.
He said that in a bid to strategically position NHIS to absorb and co-ordinate all developments in the industry, the e-NHIS enterprise platform is being pursued with wholehearted devotion, emphasizing that current partnership of NHIS with the International Finance Cooperation (IFC) is a step in the right direction.
