Nigeria: Militants Blow-Up Chevron Crude Pipeline

7 July 2009

Lagos — The unrest in the oil-rich Niger Delta region has continued to take its toll on Nigeria's crude oil production and export, as the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) on Sunday blew up a crude oil facility belonging to the United States oil major, Chevron.

The militant group also seized a chemical tanker and detained its six-man crew 20 nautical miles off the Escravos in Delta State.

This brings to two the number of attacks carried out by MEND on oil platforms in the last two days as the militant group had also on the same day attacked a Shell oil well in the Cawthorne Channel around Bonny in Rivers State.

The attacks came as crude oil price fell to a five-week low near $64 a barrel in early trading yesterday pressured by doubts over the prospects of an early global economic recovery and a firmer dollar.

MEND in an emailed statement said the pipeline was blown up at about 20.45 hours on Sunday. "The Strategic Okan Manifold, which controls about 80 per cent of Chevron Nigeria Limited Offshore crude oil to its BOP crude loading platform was blown up at about 20.45 hours on Sunday," the group said.

MEND said it seized the chemical tanker, "Siehem Peace", and its six crew members abducted and kept till further notice for allegedly failing to heed the group's warning to avoid the Niger Delta until the end of hostilities between militants and the Federal Government.

While the crew members were attacked 20 nautical miles off the Escravos, the Chevron facility attack occurred 50 nautical miles off Escravos in Delta State

According to a statement by MEND spokesman, Gbomo Jomo, the kidnapped crew consist of three Russians, an Indian and two Filipinos. MEND further warned that subsequent seizures would be set ablaze after their crew had been evacuated.

He gave the names of the crew members and their nationalities as Captain Yuriy Shastim, Chief Engineer Vasvi Bondarkov and 2nd Engineer Viktor Koshevoy (Russians); Cadet Banjit Singh Dhindsa (Indian); Arivando Galima and Tavares Rouirgo (Filipinos).

"For disregarding our warning to oil, gas and chemical tankers to keep away from the Niger Delta waters, six crew members from the chemical tanker, Siehem Peace, were seized about 20 nautical miles from Escravos on Sunday, July 5, 2009 by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and will be held until further notice.

"Their arrest is meant to serve as a warning to others that there are root issues that have to be resolved with the Nigerian government before normalcy can resume such as the return of displaced civilians to their ancestral home, compensation for damages, return of the ill trained JTF to their barracks and last but not the least, constitutional amendment to address fiscal federalism," MEND said.

Meanwhile crude oil price fell to a five-week low near $64 a barrel in early trading yesterday, pressured by doubts over the prospects of an early global economic recovery and a firmer dollar.

US crude fell $2.47 from Thursday's close to $64.26 a barrel by 0748 GMT. It traded as low as $64.11, the lowest intraday price since 28 May.

The Brent crude fell $1.51 from Friday's close to $64.10. Nymex floor trading was closed on Friday because of the US Independence Day holiday, and although oil traded electronically the exchange did not issue an official closing price.

[God Bless You Readers To Want To Know And Seek To Know The Truth] - MAY GOD BE A HAVEN OF PEACE IN OUR TIME OF TROUBLE --

[This inspiring poem was featuring in the movie “Coach Carter ”]

Our Deepest Fear Is Not That We Are Inadequate, Our Deepest Fear Is That We Are Powerful Beyond Measure. It Is Our Light , Not Our Darkness That Most Frightens Us.

We Ask Ourselves, Who Am I To Be Brilliant, Gorgeous, Talented, And Fabulous ?

Actually Who Are We Not To Be ? You Are A Child Of God.

Your Playing Small Doesn’t Serve The World.

There Is Nothing Enlightened About Shrinking So That Other People Won’t Feel Insecure Around You.

We Are All Meant To Shine, As Children Do.

We Were Born To Make Manifest The Glory Of God That Is Within Us.

It’s Not Just In Some Of Us; It’s In Everyone.

And When We Let Our Own Light Shine We Unconsciously Give Other People Permission To Do The Same.

And As We Are Liberated From Our Own Fear, Our Presence Automatically Liberates Others

- Marianne Williamson -

[NOTE – BEING AFRAID AND REFUSING TO GET INVOLVED WON’T STOP US FROM DYING. BUT BEING AFRAID CAN PREVENT US FROM LIVING]

(Nkosi Sikeleli Africa )

God bless Africa May her glory be lifted high Hear our petitions .

God bless us, Your children God we ask You to protect our nation Intervene and end all conflicts Protect us, protect our nation, our nation.

From the blue of our heaven, From the depths of our sea, Over our eternal mountain ranges, Where the cliffs give answer.

Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land.
