Abuja — The Bauchi State Government has rescinded it earlier plans to privatise the collection and disposal of waste, according to the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Alhaji Muhammadu Lele-Raga.
Lele-Raga said in Bauchi last Thursday that the government decided to suspend the plan due to the prevailing economic crunch in the country.
He said: "Our people will not be able to pay for waste collection because of the level poverty in the state. The Isa Yuguda administration is a people-oriented government and will not do anything to add to the suffering of the ordinary people."
He said the government would soon commence the construction of additional waste dump sites in government-owned estates to ensure proper dumping and collection of waste in all the major towns.
"We have observed that most of the estates have no dump sites, causing a lot of environmental and health nuisance to the inhabitants of such estates," he said.
